Causes of Hair Loss in Women

Hair-Loss-for-Women-Leeds-300x180It is natural for women to lose around 100 hairs every day, but excessive loss of hair, especially in women, can be a symptom of an underlying problem in the body. Female Pattern Baldness, Telogen Effluvium, Anagen Effluvium, Alopecia Areata and Traction Alopecia are the most common types of hair loss in women and are a result of different underlying issues. In order to treat the issue of hair falling out, women need to know what is causing it.

  1. Female Pattern Baldness or Androgenetic alopecia is due to the actions of various hormones and especially dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a product of the male hormone testosterone. Normally, women do not possess the hormone in quantities large enough to create hair loss, however, menopause and sometimes heredity from either of the parents may lead to thinning hair on the scalp and bald patches. Hormonal changes also cause the same type of hair loss after pregnancy and when some types of ovarian cysts occur.
  2. Telogen Effluvium, is also associated with hormones and especially with DHT. It is a short term reaction to a stressful event for the female body. This could be excessive dieting, child birth or extreme stress. Six weeks to three months after the event, hair loss occurs. Usually, the hair grows back even if not treated.
  3. Anagen Effluvium is hair loss because of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells in the body, in order to destroy cancer cells. Because hair has the same quality, sometimes it is affected as well.
  4. Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease, which attacks hair follicles in the scalp area. This is also usually a hereditary disease.
  5. Traction Alopecia is the condition caused by the mistreating of hair with tight hairstyles, extensions and styling products.

Hair Loss Factors in Women

There are countless factors why women may experience hair loss. Anything from clinical problems to hormonal changes to stress and anxiety. It’s difficult to try and diagnose the root cause.

Here are some of the reasons why women experience hair loss:

  • Age.
  • Genetics.
  • Radiation medication.
  • Medical problems.
  • Extreme hairstyling (hair shade, horse tails, braids).
  • Usage of destructive chemicals on hair.
  • Stress.
  • Menopause.

Hair Loss Treatments for Women

Because hair loss sometimes has to do with hair mistreatment, often women with thinning hair tend to dismiss the problem. In some cases that is the right thing to do. However, if the problem persists for more than a couple of months it is recommended to seek a doctor’s opinion on what is causing it and how to treat it.

There are various hair loss treatments for women on the market ranging from shampoos to hair transplants. The treatment type of choice is dependent on the type of hair loss experienced, the type of treatment available, how effective it is going to be and budget.

The treatment that is usually suggested to most women is Minoxidil 2%. The treatment involves the application of the substance on the balding areas. Its results are not permanent and stop when the treatment is terminated. Common side-effects also include: burning or irritation of the eye, itching, redness or irritation at the treated area, as well as unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body.

If hair loss is the result of malnutrition doctors may suggest taking iron supplements and when hormonal imbalance is to blame, spironolactone or oral contraceptives are prescribed.

In cases when hair loss is permanent, or a permanent solution to the hair loss problem is desired, hair transplants from healthy areas of the scalp can be used in order to cure hair loss in women.

Changing your hair regimen can only benefit your hair if the previous one was to blame for your hair loss. In that case it has been found that anti-dandruff shampoos that contain ketoconazole can slow it down.

To conclude, when facing persistent hair loss ask for your doctor’s advice and pick carefully your course of action. If your selected treatment is unsuccessful consult your doctor again because hair loss can be a sign of a vast number of undiscovered problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair loss in women uses follicles from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp, implanted into areas of thinning or loss. All procedures at our Leicester clinic are performed by GMC-registered surgeons.

Most patients return to work within a few days. Transplanted hairs shed at 2 to 4 weeks, which is normal. New growth begins at 3 to 4 months and the majority of the final result is visible by 9 to 12 months.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Most patients experience minimal discomfort. Some tenderness in the first few days after surgery is normal.

Cost depends on the number of grafts required. Your patient advisor will provide an exact quote during your free consultation. Finance options are available.

The best way to confirm suitability is through our free consultation. Your surgeon will assess your donor density and discuss realistic outcomes.

Graft counts depend on the area treated and degree of hair loss. Typical procedures range from 1,000 to 3,000 grafts. Your surgeon will give an accurate estimate.

It was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Naturally, I was unsure on which organisation to choose for the procedure, but HSHTC came across as professional and caring, as well as having a wide range of availability. There are negative reviews on all businesses, and this drives customers like myself away. However, something told me this would likely be someone with unrealistic expectations, or not reading into the procedure as a whole. I chose to ignore the negatives and read the positives. Sara the coordinator was absolutely amazing! She outlined everything and made it clear of what is expected and what is not. After a great consultation, I was passed to the next stage of meeting surgeon Dr Ditta. He presented extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, so I decided to go ahead with the procedure. The surgery day was expected to be a long, but rewarding day. It started with having to shave my head (mandatory requirement for this procedure). I’d say to anyone the thought is worser than the event, and to just do it for the positives that will follow. Dr Ditta and his team were extremely caring and sensitive, especially with briefing before any painful situations pre anaesthetic. After that, I was allowed to top up when requested and leave them to do what they do best. The day as a whole was enjoyable and interesting to speak to the team to learn more about the procedure and get to know them. Lunch was provided (yay). It was lovely of them to offer, and you definitely need to eat mid procedure to keep energy levels. At the end of the day, I was given clear instruction of how to have the best success rate. It was through a video and in person. If you have questions, ask as it’s what the team is there for. The first few days of recovery can be quite awkward and uncomfortable, but I’d recommend booking 2 weeks off work to fully recover and let the grafts set. Once you get use to the sleeping situation, it’s easy and a lovely break from reality (put pillows below your knees and stack below head for pure comfort!). The aftercare products was extremely useful and easy to use. The grafts will fall out after a few weeks, it’s expected and you’re told this plenty of times!! Having a healthy lifestyle makes your hair grow quicker and thicker, so swap your diet to good healthy hair foods. When your transplanted hair grows back, it’s an amazing feeling, but only the beginning. As the months pass by, you’ll notice a massive improvement. During this process, you’ll have regular aftercare and the chance to raise any concerns. I personally didn’t have any issues and was just grateful to still be in contact and told everything is going as it should. I’m 6 months post surgery and I’m seeing the benefits hugely, and it’s not even reached maximum results yet, as this is one year. Thanks for an amazing service!

Having given some time and thought about having a Hair Transplant, I contacted Harley street hair transplant clinics. The consultant (Sara) explained everything regarding the procedure with Dr.Ditta and the technicians. From the beginning, Dr.Ditta explained the days events and how the procedures would be done beginning with taking a photo of my head and showing me where the grafts would be taken from and where they would be placed. The procedures would be done and completed in two parts, with a lunch break in between. Once completed, Dr.Ditta went through the aftercare, explaining what to do each day for 10 days. I was given capsules, shampoo, sponge, neck pillow for sleeping with and information regarding how to look after my hair. Dr. Ditta and his team were welcoming and friendly ensuring I was looked after throughout both parts of the procedure. Sara maintained regular contact to make sure recovery was going well. The results were great, patience is needed as the grafts start to grow, and then you can see the results. Extremely happy with everything, from start to finish.

Would highly recommend! Everything went very smoothly, communication was excellent throughout. I travelled from Edinburgh to Manchester for the procedure and all travel and accommodation costs were covered. Dr Ditta explained everything clearly and delivered clear and detailed post-op instructions. I was delighted with the whole experience and results so far are very promising!

Overall, my experience at the clinic was positive. Dr. Ditta was exceptional — he made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure, and his professionalism was truly reassuring. However, I was disappointed with one member of the team who, in my opinion, did not fully follow health and safety protocols. She had her hair down without a surgical cap and was using her phone while wearing gloves, then proceeded to touch my hair without changing them. This raised concerns about hygiene and cross-contamination. Her manner was also not very pleasant, which made the experience less comfortable. Although I was initially worried about the risk of infection, I felt more at ease by the end of my visit. I hope the management reviews this matter to ensure that strict hygiene and professional standards are consistently maintained. Aside from this, I was very satisfied with Dr. Ditta’s care and look forward to seeing my results.

Dear Team. Following my hair transplant last Saturday I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the team, for making my journey as pleasant as possible. From the first consultation, to having my hotel booked, to the procedure itself, I couldn’t have been more impressed. Finally a big thank you to Doctor Ditta and the team, who were so kind when I felt unwell, making me drinking chocolate and reassuring me throughout the process. Add to this, their expertise and professionalism, what more can one ask for? I look forward to the final part of my hair transplant next year. Once again a big thanks to you all. Kind regards Keith Yates

All great from start to finish. Sara with the introduction was very warm and personable, Dr. Ditta and the staff very professional and did a great job in the day of surgery, and Yannis and Stuart were great in the aftercare and checking in appointments.

Before the procedure I had online and face to face consultations with no obligations. These gave me all the information I needed and really put me at ease and gave me the confidence to proceed. Everyone was really knowledgeable and friendly and clearly very experienced. Booking the procedure was quick and easy and I got a date that suited me. The procedure itself went really smoothly I was able to put headphones in and listen to podcasts and was very comfortable. Afterwards I was given really detailed notes on what to do and what would happen and everything went exactly as planned. It was so reassuring knowing that advice was only a text message away and responses were always immediate. I'm two weeks post procedure now and everything has gone back to normal and the recovery is going just as planned. I'm so glad I did this and chose Harley Street Hair Transplant!

Great clinic with friendly and experienced team. I wanted my surgery done in the UK and found the clinic on Google. Process started with virtual consultations with patient advisor and then with the surgeon. FULL costs were given up front, with good finance options available. On the day I designed a new hairline with the surgeon and ended up getting about 1600 grafts iirc, which was good value for money. Clear pre- and post-op instructions given and recovery has gone as expected. Now waiting patiently for regrowth :) - Grant
